  Endemic.
The hairy type variety is apparently commoner than the glabrous var. lolia-ceum, but mixed populations occur locally. Aucher 2977, which forms the type of both varieties, is one such mixed gathering. Boissier's description app-lies only to the hairy variant (var. muticum); Jaubert & Spach's description applies to both, but their illustration (t. 317) shows the glabrous variant and later authors have restricted the epithet loliaceum to the glabrous variant only.
