A. pauciloba Boiss., Diagn. ser. 1(6): 83 (1845). Figure 9, p. 181.
Erect or rarely decumbent herb, (15-)30-45 cm, with adpressed greyish-silvery or yellowish sericeous indumentum; rootstock somewhat woody. Stems simple or commonly branched near base, 1-headed, foliate below, naked at least in upper ½ . Leaves variable in dissection often on individual plants, basal leaves petiolate (petioles up to 7.5 cm) widening above into broad cuneate rachis, lamina ± ovate in outline, (l-)2-3(-6) x 0.5-3 cm, divided into 3-7 primary segments, 1-1.5 cm, linear-oblanceolate or cuneate, 3-lobed at apex or more deeply divided into 3-5 linear-oblong segments; upper leaves cuneate-spathulate, entire or with a few teeth near apex. Capitula radiate or discoid; involucre 1-1.5 cm broad; phyllaries ovate-lanceolate, sparsely to densely lanate-tomentose. Ligules when present yellow, 10-30, 2-7.5 mm. Disc flowers 2.5-3 mm, not inflated at base at maturity. Paleae oblanceolate, ± suddenly acuminate. Achenes angular, obscurely ribbed, straw-coloured, 1.5-2 mm; corona often unilateral, up to 0.5 mm. Fl. 4-7. On limestone screes and ledges, marly banks and disturbed steppe, 40-1800 m.

The species is endemic and probably an E. Medit. element. It is related to A. kotschyana because of its yellow ray flowers, but A. pauciloba is generally a larger plant with cuneate leaf rachises and broad segments. It is possible that a series of genes in A. pauciloba may determine the presence or absence of the ray flowers and, if present, the degree of their development. Leaf character is also variable, ranging from pinnatisect basal leaves to cuneate, entire-margined cauline leaves on a single specimen. Others, e.g. the syntypes of A. leucopiloides, have 2-pinnatisect basal leaves with linear segments. The same range of leaf dissection appears possible in each of the varieties.
