  W. & C. Europe, Balkans, C. & S. Russia, Crimea, W. Syria, Iran, Trans-caspia & eastwards to Japan. Euro-Sib, element. The taxonomy of A. minus s.l.
is difficult, and I have taken a rather different view from that of Arènes. Accord-ing to that author, A. majus (Gaertner) Bernh. (syn. A. lappa auct. non L.) occurs in Turkey and across Asia to China and Japan. I consider that this taxon is best regarded as a subspecies of A. minus; it is distinguished from A. minus subsp. pubens chiefly by its larger involucres and more definitely corymbose inflorescence. I have seen no material of A. majus from Turkey or E. Asia, and A, minus subsp. pubens appears to be much the most widespread subspecies. The petioles of the radical leaves are sometimes stated to be solid in A. majus and hollow in A. minus. However, since this correlation is still uncertain and the character cannot be observed in dried specimens, I have not taken it into account here (vide Arènes, op. cit. 69). Field notes on this character are needed.
