Europe, N. Africa, Caucasia, N. Iran. Euro-Sib, element. A. caucasica was distinguished by its completely glabrous stem, often glaucous (rarely sparsely glandular below inflorescence); leaves without hairs on nerves; flowers larger and paler in colour. Examination of Turkish material shows that these differences break down. The stems and leaves of specimens from N.E. Turkey (here included in A. belladonna) e.g. A7 Trabzon, T.Baytop (ISTE 14328)! A8 Çoruh: D. 29970b! A9 Çoruh: D. 32450! show an increasingly glabrous tendency, while their flowers are frequently pale greenish yellow with mauve or lilac lobes. Intermediates combining characters of A. caucasica and A. belladonna occur.
