B. vulgaris L., Sp. PL 330 (1753). Syn: B. orientalis Schneider in Bull. Herb. Boiss. ser. 2, 5: 666 (1905); B. vulgaris var. orientalis (Schn.) Grossh., Fl. Kavk. 4: 81 (1950). Ic.: Ross-Craig, Draw. Brit. PL 2: t. 1 (1948).
Shrub, up to 2 m. Young stems with yellow bark and black lenticels which persist in the older, greyer bark. Leaves much longer than the spines, ovate-elliptical or obovate, the margins varying from finely spinulose to subentire, often on the same bush, and without stomata on the upper leaf surface. Racemes 15-25-flowered. Berries remaining red when ripe. Fl. 5. Stony slopes and gullies in woods and scrub, 900-1500 m.
Described from European woods (Hb. Cliff. BM!).
  Mainly N. Anatolia. A2(E) Istanbul: Bebek, 8 v 1918, Post! A4 Kastamonu: south of Kastamonu, 900 m, D. 25071! A5 Kastamonu: Taşköprü to Gökceağac, 600 m, D. 38047B! Samsun: beach area after Kirazlik, 5 m, Tobey 369! A6 Tokat: Tokat to Artova, D. 24864! A8 Çoruh: above Artvin, 1000-1300 m, D. 29753!
Europe, except the N. Plants without finely serrate leaf-margins have been separated off as B. orientalis, or as B. vulgaris var. orientalis. As this character varies among the leaves of a single bush, we do not consider this variety worthy of recognition.
Intermediates between B. vulgaris and B. crataegina occur, principally in a
wide circle around the Central Plateau of Turkey. The following may be cited: A2(E) Istanbul: nr. Kadiköy, 13 v 1893. Azn. 57! A4 Kastamonu: W of Kastamonu, 900 m, D. 38774! D. 36943! B6 Seyhan: Saimbeyli to Karakılisse. 9 vii 1906. Post 607! 37 Erzincan: Cimin, nr. Erzincan, 1500 m, D. 31737! C2 Muğla: Sandras Da. at Köklüce, 1350 m, D. 13600! Similarly, intermediates between B. vulgaris and B. integerrima occur, mostly in Russian Armenia, but also in places along the north of Turkey: A4 Kastamonu: W of Kastamonu, 900 m, D. 38776! A5 Amasya: Amasya, Manis. 117! Unambiguous B. vulgaris occurs in north Turkey, in Euxine vegetation. Plants showing predominantly vulgaris characters also occur principally in the north, with a few outliers further south, and often in the scrub associated with clearing or with the south-facing slopes of the northern hills.
