Loosely tufted annual with geniculate culms, 10-60 cm, often rooting from lower nodes. Leaves glabrous or hairy; blades linear-lanceolate, to 6 cm x 6 mm. Inflorescence of 2-many shortly pedunculate or almost sessile racemes l-2(-3) cm. Spikelets 2-2.5 mm, shortly hairy. Glumes unequal, lower usually reduced to a small veinless scale, upper as long as spikeiet, 5-veined. Lower lemma similar to upper glume. Lemma of hermaphrodite floret smooth and shiny at maturity. Fl. 5-10. Weed, especially of shady and moist places, c. 250 m. Type: [Islands] in arvis circa Junonis templum in insula Samo, Sibthorp (holo. OXF). Mainly N.W. Turkey, S. Anatolia, Islands.
