C. ovata Desf., Fl. Atl. 1: 404 (1798). Syn: C. spinosa L. var. ovata (Desf.) Batt. ex Jah. & Maire, Cat. PL Maroc: 314 (1932) non Sibth. & Sm. Differs from C. spinosa L. in the elliptic or obovate leaves, often more or less pubescent and usually with a mucro, and in the strongly zygomorphic flowers (having much longer lower petals than upper). Three varieties are recognisable in Turkey: 1. Stipules strong, recurved 2. Stems white; all parts canescent, the gynophore hairy at base; leaves 15-30(-25) x 10-20(-25) mm var. palaestina 2. Stems green or purplish; at most the leaves pubescent, the gynophore glab-rous; leaves 20-35(-40) x 10-22 mm var. canescens 1. Stipules straight, horizontal or slightly upcurved, often weak var. herbacea var. herbacea (Willd.) Zoh., Bull. Res. Counc. Israel, 8D: 56 (1960). Syn: C. herbacea Willd., Enum. Hort. Berol. 560 (1809). The leaves of this variety are larger than those of var. palaestina, being (20-)25-35(-40) x (14-)16-25(-30) mm. Type: Caucasus, Bieberstein. Scattered.
