  Plant 20-65 cm. Stems brownish to straw-coloured, sparsely to densely villous. Cauline leaves glandular, pubescent to arachnoid, greyish-green, 20-50 x 4-12mm (excl. spines), ovate-acuminate, amplexicaul, margins spiny-pinnatifid. Capitula in usually dense corymbs. Outer phyllaries 15-30 mm, equalling to slightly exceeding inner, erect to patent; median and inner gradually acuminate, not appendaged. Flowers purplish-pink. Fl. 7-9. Disturbed steppe, fallow fields, sand dunes, 10-900 m.

  External distribution of species: E. Medit., Crimea, Caucasia, W. & N. Iran. C. glaucus subsp. anatolicus (Boiss.) Hanelt, op. cit. 112 {Kentrophyllum anatoli-cum Boiss., Diagn. ser. 1(6): 113, 1845), which is distinguished from subsp. glaucus by its much larger leaves and broader capitula, is native to Palestine. Handel-Mazzetti's record of this taxon from N. Anatolia is not accepted, as it is based on a very poor, unidentifiable specimen (A5 Samsun: nr Samsun, c. 50 m, Hand.-Mazz. 124!).
