C. persicus Willd., Sp. PL 3(3): 1707 (1803). Syn: C. flavescens auct. non Willd. (1803).   Plant 13-90 cm. Stems glabrous, shining white. Cauline leaves sparsely villous, yellowish-green, 15-40x3-20 mm, ovate-acuminate, amplexicaul, margins dentate to entire, bearing slender yellow spines. Outer phyllaries lanceolate-acuminate, 2 x as long as inner. Flowers bright yellow. Inner achenes pappose. Fl. 6-9. Mosul, Dagh al Radzijem inter Zakho et Sharanish, in collibus siccis, Rechinger 1073), should be sought in S.E. Turkey. It is distin-guished from C. persicus by the outer phyllaries which are shorter than the median, and have 10-13 rather than 4-8 pairs of spines. In habit C. curdicus resembles the Transcaspian C. gypsicolus, and Hanelt suggests that it may have originated as a hybrid between the latter and C. persicus.
