C. carduiformis DC., Prodr. 6:590 (1838). Biennial (or more rarely perennial) with thickened taproot, stem erect, (10-)20-90 cm, usually branched only in upper part with 3-5 capitula (sometimes branched more profusely). Stem and leaves (especially below) hispid or arachnoid-tomentose. Leaves l-2-pinnatisect, larger segments l.5-8(-12) mm broad, terminal equal or only slightly larger, small segments usually present between large ones. Involucre 17-25(-30) x(15-)20-25(-30) mm, ovoid. Appendages only partly concealing basal part of phyllaries, triangular, gradually narrowed into spine, 10-30 mm (incl. spine), dark to light brown, with numerous cilia on each side ( ± ascending the spine), (l.5-)4-5(-8) mm. Flowers rose-purple or whitish (nerves usually orange). Achenes 5-6(-8) mm; pappus (6-)7-10 mm, inner row 1.5-2.5 mm. 1.
