  Perennial, rhizome ending in a rosette of leaves, flowering stems lateral, decumbent to ascending, 10-50 cm, simple or with few short branches in upper part. Leaves ± densely floccose- to villous-tomentose; those of sterile rosettes lanceolate to broadly lanceolate, entire or with l-2(-3) pairs of lobes or coarse teeth, cauline leaves lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, entire or with few coarse teeth, shortly decurrent. Involucre 18-25 x 15-25 mm, ovoid to subglobose; capitula (inci. marginal flowers) 4.5-7(-8) cm diam. Appendages a broad blackish brown border (concealing most of basal part of phyllaries) with numerous silvery 2.5-4 mm cilia. Flowers whitish (creamy white, yellow when dry) or rose-purple to violet-purple (very rarely blue), anther-tube steel blue, marginal flowers strongly radiant. Achenes 5.5-6 mm; pappus 1-3 mm. Fl. 6-7 (-8). Igneous rocky or grassy slopes, open Pinus sylvestris and Betuda forests, 1900-2750 m.
