  Perennial with woody base with rosettes and usually several erect or ascending stems, 10-40 cm, simple or more rarely with 1-3 long branches, stems with fibrous remains of decayed petioles at base. Leaves adpressed grey-tomentose below, usually only slightly tomentose to glabrescent above; basal and lower petiolate, very variable, narrowly lanceolate with denticulate margin or with 1-2 lobes or lyrate with large lanceolate terminal segment and 1-2 pairs of lateral segments to pinnatipartite with up to 4 pairs of linear-lanceolate to oblong denticulate or entire lateral segments; median and upper few, sessile, smaller and more often undivided. Involucre 18-25(-28) x 15-25(-30) mm, subglobose. Appendages very large, totally concealing basal part of phyllaries, membranous; outer lanceolate, whitish to straw-coloured; median ovate, light brown, with numerous 2-3(-4) mm cilia. Flowers rose-purple, marginal strongly radiant. Achenes 6-6.5 mm; pappus 11-16 mm, barbellate to plumose, inner row not differentiated. Fl. 7-8. Rocky slopes and scree, 1700-3500 m.

  Transcaucasia. A very handsome plant with considerable variation in the height of the stem, size of the heads and especially the shape of the leaves. One specimen has been noted with the pappus only scabrous! It is very doubtful if plants from Caucasia described as separate species in the genus Aetheopappiis (e.g. Ae. caucasicus Sosn. from the Caucasus) really merit specific rank,
