C. sessilis Willd. var. pinnatiloba Rech. fil. in Symb. Bot. Upsal. 11(5):33 (1952)! C. rhizanthoides Tzvel. in Fl. URSS 28:620(1963)! Ic: Fl. URSS 28: t. 27 (1963). Perennial with woody rootstock (sometimes profusely branched). Capitulum solitary, sessile or nearly sessile (stem up to 2 cm, very rarely more) in a rosette of leaves. Leaves sparsely to densely covered with septate hairs, very variable in outline, most often lyrate with triangular to lanceolate terminal segment and l-3(-4) pairs of smaller lanceolate lateral segments or broadly lanceolate and entire or with a single lobe near base on each side. Involucre 15-20(-23) x 10-15(-18) mm, ovoid. Appendages small, straw-coloured to light brown, erect or reflexed, narrowly triangular, with l-4(-5) pairs of cilia (1-3 mm) and terminal l-4(-5) mm spinule, appendages sometimes reduced to a mere spinule. Flowers yellow, marginal not radiant. Achenes 5-6 mm; pappus 1-2 mm. Fl. 6-7. Rocky slopes and screes, 900-3600 m. Type: [Talysh] in campis altiorum montium Talüsch, alt. 1829-2011 m, C.A.Meyer (LE! Plants with the appendages reduced to a mere spinule and plants with undivided leaves look rather distinctive but it seems impossible to separate them from the more typical plants with which they are connected by numerous transitional forms. There are some collections with the appendages larger and with more cilia ± intermediate between C. rhizantha and C. armena, e.g. A8 Erzurum: 2 km N. of Karayollari gölyurt bakimevi, 2300 m, Battler 14217!
