  Perennial (?), up to at least 100 cm (fide Petrak). Stem branched, purplish, unwinged, sparsely to densely arachnoid. Median cauline leaves semi-amplexicaul, narrowly ovate-oblong, pinnatisect, lateral lobes bifid, toothed, 4-8-paired, triangular, as in C. caucasicum, lateral and terminal lobes and teeth with 5-18 mm apical spine, spinose-strigose above, setae sometimes intergrading with spines, 0.2-12.5 mm, glabrous; tomentose below. Lateral branches 2-4, 1-4-capitulate. Uppermost leaves 1-3, equal to or longer than involucre. Involucres nodding, depressed-globose, 25-40 mm. Phyllaries arachnoid, c. 7-9-seriate, refiexed or erecto-patent, purplish with stramineous base and apical spine; median 20-30 mm, incl. 8-20 x 0.2-0.4 mm apical spine. Corollas purple, 23-26 mm. Achenes 4-5.5 mm. Pappus 20-23 mm- Fl. 8. In woods and pastures, ascending to 1800 m.
