  Biennial, 40-75 cm. Stem solitary, unwinged, rosulate at base with pinnatifid leaves, corymbose-paniculate above. Median cauline leaves oblong-lanceolate, auriculate at base, closely pinnatifid, lobes bearing numerous slender ivory spines up to 8-14 mm, lamina green above, white-tomentellous below. Capitula corym-bosely clustered on densely spiny branches, ± nodding, subtended by numerous spines subequal to involucre. Involucres hemispherical, umbilicate, 17-22 mm. Phyllaries 6-8-seriate, median oblong-lanceolate, widening above into a mem-branous appendage with centre blackish but not or scarcely vittate, margin membranous, ivory and deeply lacerate, midrib running into a pallid 4-6 mm spine. Corollas always white, 16-20 mm. Achenes c. 4.5 mm. Pappus 16-18 mm. Fl. 7-8. Rocky slopes, rarely on shores, (s.l.-)1040-2500 m.
