C. lappaceum (Bieb.) Fischer in Cat. Jard. Gorenki ed. 2:35 (1812). Many-stemmed perennial, 30-120 cm. Stems sometimes branched, unwinged,
fioccose-arachnoid. Median cauline leaves semi-amplexicaul, oblong, pinnatifid to pinnatisect, lateral lobes bifid, 2-8-paired, broadly triangular to lanceolate, lateral and terminal lobes with weak to stout 1-24 mm apical spines, spinose-strigose above, with setae 0.3-3.0 mm, otherwise ± glabrous; tomentose below. Lateral branches 0-many, short or elongate, 1-7-capitulate; uppermost leaves 1-6, usually longer than involucre, semi-involucrate or not. Involucres erect in racemose panicles or racemes, globose-ovoid to broadly obovoid, 10-25 mm. Phyllaries arachnoid, 7-10-seriate; median 6-13 mm incl. refiexed or recurved c. 1-2x0.2 mm apical spine. Corollas whitish to pinkish-purple, 12-20 mm. Achenes 4.5-6.0 mm. Pappus 10-17 mm. Fl. 7-9.
Three subspecies of C. lappaceum occur in Turkey, and show some degree of overlap.
1. Involucres long-peduncled in loose racemose panicles, corollas whitish subsp.lappaceum
1. Involucres in dense racemes or dense racemose panicles, corollas whitish to purple
   2. Apical spine of lobes of median cauline leaf moderately stout to stout, more than 5 mm, the longer leaf lobes broadly triangular to broadly lanceolate subsp. anatolicum
   2. Apical spine of lobes of median cauline leaf weak, short, less than 5 mm, the longer leaf lobes elongate-triangular to linear-lanceolate (plant usually more slender than subsp. anatolicum) subsp. tenuilobum
