  Shrub or small tree up to 4·5 m; branches often reddish. Leaves ovate-lanceolate to broadly elliptic, 4-10 cm, with 3-5 pairs of veins. Inflorescence 3-4·5 cm diam., many-flowered. Flowers whitish or cream; sepals 0·5-1·5 mm; petals 4-7 mm. Drupe 5-8 mm, globose, purplish-black. Fl. 5-6. Limestone slopes, in woodland, s.L-1400 m.

  Throughout Europe. A record of C. sanguinea from A2(E) Istanbul: Belgrad Ormani, Kayacik, is probably referable to subsp. australis.
