Laubh. 1:144, 146, 147 (1964); Kasapligil, op. cit. f. 2 (1972). Map 94. Tall shrub to 10 m with smooth, dark grey-brown bark. Young shoots reddish-brown with glandular hairs. Leaves orbicular to broadly ovate, 7-12 x 6-10 cm, with 7-10 pairs of veins, biserrate and slightly lobulate, shortly acumi-nate, densely pubescent beneath. Petioles 0.5-1,5(-2) cm, densely glandular-hispid. Staminate catkins to 10 cm. Involucre tubular, contracted above, much longer than nut, somewhat fleshy in lower part, velutinous and stipitate-glandular, with broadly toothed lobes. Nuts ovoid to subcylindrical, 15-25(-30) x 12-16(-20) mm, in clusters of 3-6 or sometimes singly. Fl. 3. Cultivated on the Black Sea coast in N.W. & N.E. Anatolia for more than 4 centuries; orchards, mostly on N. slopes, 100-800(~1000) m. Described from cultivated material. N.W. & N.E. Anatolia. A2(A) Kocaeli: Izmit, Değirmendere area, Yalt. obs.
