(1792); G. cordatum Roemer & Schultes, op. cit. 259 (1818). Ic: Fl. Pal. 3: t. 427 (1979). Low annual, 3-15(-17) cm. Stems'usually branched from base, branches erect to more often ascending or spreading, sharply quadrangular, glabrous to somewhat hairy (mainly above); lower 2-3 internodes c. 1-3 cm, upper much abbreviated, finally entirely covered by enlarged bracts. Vegetative leaves in 1-few whorls, 4-12 x 1.5-3 mm, obovate, oblanceolate to oblong, obtuse, shortly petiolate, glabrous; leaves of floral region (bracts) yellowish, 7.5-15 x 3-10 mm, strongly accrescent in fruit to c. 15 x 15 mm and closely superimposed, lowest ovate-oblong, rhombic-ovate to ovate, upper cordiform to broadly cordiform, acute to obtuse, sessile glabrous, margins ciliolate towards base or antrorsely scabridulous. Inflorescence spike-like, breaking at nodes when in fruit; cymes c. 5-7-flowered, peduncles to 3 mm, pedicels 0.25-1 mm;peduncles and pedicels scabridulous to hirsute or glabrous, finally reflexed. Corolla pale yellow or greenish-yellow, 1.25-2.75 mm diam., lobes ovate to oblong, acuminate to obtusish. Mericarps usually single, reniform, c. 2-3 mm, papillose-hairy when young, glabrous when ripe, tightly enclosed and dispersed together with a stem fragment, node and persistent papyraceous bract. 2n = 10.
