  Deciduous tree to 15 m. Bark furrowed on old trunk. Young shoots pubescent,later ± glabrous, greenish-brown, shining; buds reddish-brown, glabrous, acute. Leaves entire, elliptic to oblong, to 14x6 cm, rounded to broadly cuneate at base, dark green and glabrous above, greyish or glaucescent and pubescent beneath, at least on veins; petiole c. 1.5 cm. Male flowers 1-3, c. 5 mm, with creamy-white tube and yellow or pinkish-red lobes, with 16-28 stamens; female flowers solitary, subsessile, 8-10 mm, reddish-brown. Fruit globose, 1.5-2 cm diam., yellow or bluish-black. Fl. 5-6. Forested slopes with Alınış and Castaiiea, 50-340 m. (cultivated up to 1000 m); with Pterocarya at 1100 m in S. Anatolia.

Caucasia to China and Japan; naturalized in the Balkans. Native and naturalized on hillsides, forested slopes, field margins and roadsides in N.E. Anatolia. In the Anti-Taurus (Ahir Da.) it grows with old trees of Pterocarya fraxinifolia and is evidently relict. Cultivated throughout N. Anatolia for its edible fruits (Date plum, in Turkish "Küçük meyveli Trabzon Hurmasi") and ornament: A2(A) Bursa: Bursa, 27 ix 1886, Bornm.(!); A3 Zonguldak: d.
