Stems erect, simple or branched above, up to 100 cm, ridged, thinly arachnoid to lanate, usually with numerous often purplish capitate glandular hairs rarely absent. Leaves narrow-triangular to oblong-elliptic in outline, 1-2-pinnatifid or pinnatisect with 4-7 pairs of irregularly dentate triangular segments with generally short spines; greenish above with capitate glandular hairs, arachnoid to lanate below with glands on veins. Heads 3.5-6.5 cm diam., bluish to white. Capitulum c. 2 cm; brash fairly dense, c. 7 mm. Phyllaries 13-20, with capitate glandular hairs or glabrous, fimbriate; outer c. 8 mm; median c. 13 mm; innermost loosely connate up to c. 4 mm from base or ± free, c. 16 mm. Corolla pale blue to whitish; tube c. 5 mm; lobes c. 7 mm. Pappus bristles connate for c. 1/2 their length. Achenes c. 5 mm. Fl. 8. In woods, rocky slopes, roadsides, near s.l.-1930 m. 1. Stems eglandular; outer phyllaries glabrous subsp. albidus 1. Stems densely glandular; outer phyllaries with capitate glandular hairs subsp. sphaerocephalus subsp. sphaerocephalus. A specimen from C8 Mardin (Bakakri, Sint. 1888:1619!) may belong here but the leaf segments are much broader than is usual in E. sphaerocephalus and the brush is longer. It might represent a separate taxon but further material is needed. |
