Europe to Caucasia, Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan. Doubtfully native in Turkey, but widely cultivated and naturalised near watercourses. Possibly originating from C. Asia. The leaves become progressively glabrescent on the upper surface, growing much larger between the flowering time and fruiting stages. Such mature large-leaved specimens have been called E. orientalis L. or E. angustifolia var. orientalis (L.) Kuntze by previous authors.
