Mediterranean area, tropical Africa. Introduced in S. Africa. Resembling E. minor but leaf margins and lemmas completely eglandular. Although small axillary panicles arising from the lower leaf sheaths are stated to be characteristic of this species and often used as a diagnostic character in keys, this is not always so and the axillary panicles are in fact absent in three of the Turkish specimens cited. The spikelets in these specimens are also much smaller and fewer-flowered than usually observed in W. Mediterranean material. |
