  Tufted annual. Stems erect or geniculate-ascending from base, to 65 cm, green or ± glaucous, smooth, glabrous. Ligule long-hairy, to 2.5 mm. Leaf blades flat, linear-lanceolate, 3-17 x 0.2-0.6 cm, acuminate, glabrous, margins minutely scabridulous, with raised yellow or brownish glands. Panicle terminating stem (axillary inflorescences absent), 4-25 cm; branches minutely scab-ridulous, glandular or not. Spikelets densely crowded, green, yellowish- or greyish-green or greenish-purple, with up to 50 florets, strongly flattened-cornpressed, linear-lanceolate to lanceolate-ovate, reaching 2.2 cm and more than 2 mm broad; pedicels very much shorter than spikelets, scabridulous, usually with 1-2 glands, rarely more. Glumes unequal, ovate, acute, lower 1.2-1.6 mm, upper 1.8-2 mm. Lemmas overlapping, broadly ovate-navicular, 2-2.5 (-2.8) mm, obtuse-truncate with short mucro, keel often glandular. Palea persistent, c. 2 mm, keels scabridulous-ciliolate. Stamens 3, anthers small, 0.2 mm, yellow. Caryopsis subglobose, 0.6-0.7 mm, irregularly ridged, dark reddish-brown. Fl. 5-10 (-11). Hill slopes, in Quercus petraea-P. nigra sub sp. pall-asiana forest, shaded gullies, dried up river beds, sand dunes, at edge of ditches, in fields and vineyards, s.l.-ll 70 m.

In almost all material examined, the spikelet pedicels have 1-2 glands buttwo specimens from Istanbul A2(b): Kilia, 15 viii 1897, Azn.! A2(A): Pendik to Tuzla, 27 ix 1893, Péronin! have pedicels with more than two glands. Specimens marked with an asterisk have glandular panicle branches, a character also present in Lebanese material, e.g. Ain es Sunnoon, nr Sûq el Zharb, viii 1900, G. Post!
