Iran, Afghanistan. Distribution of species: widespread throughout Europe and temperate Asia. Euro-Sib, element. The division of E. acer in Turkey into two subspecies is in line with the treatment of this widely distributed species by Wagenitz (in Hegi, 111. Fl. Mittel-Eur. 6(3): 78-81, 1964). The subspecies here do not seem particularly well separated geographically or ecologically, but further east, in Iran and Afghanistan, subsp. pycnotrichus, which may be able to with-stand somewhat drier conditions than subsp. acer, appears to predominate.
