Caespitose perennial. Stems 30-70 cm. Leaf sheaths closed only at base; ligule 0.5-1.5(-l .8) mm, rounded. Leaf blades erect, glabrous, or scabrid near tip (irregularly curled and scabrid all over in subsp. caucasica), acute, sometimes pungent, lowest 1/3-1/5 x uppermost, (0.4-)0.5-l(-l.l) mm broad; veins 7-11, ribs 5-9, prominent for 1/2 their length or more, usually broadly rounded, lateral ones (in cross section) resembling an anvil, with or without a short row of sclerenchyma cells above, glabrous or hairy above; sclerenchyma ring of 1-2 (rarely 2-4) rows of cells, cells (l/8-)l/6-2/3(-l) x epidermis cell. Panicle 4-10 cm, erect, oblong; branches slender, subflexuous, bearing few to many short or ± long hairs. Spikelets variegated light green and violet (glaucous and pale violet in subsp. caucasica), 8-12 mm, with (3-)4-6 florets. Upper glume ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, 4.3-6 x 1.4-2.2 mm, obtuse or shortly to long-acuminate. Lemma lanceolate, 5.5-8 x 2.3-3 mm, shortly acuminate, scarious in upper 1/4-1/6, mucronate or with an awn to 1.5 mm. Ovary densely hispid.
1. Leaf blades very scabrid throughout, upper surface densely short- or long-pilose, dead blades deciduous; spikelets glaucous, only pale violet-suffused, 8.5-10(-l2) mm; upper glume lanceolate, distinctly acuminate subsp. caucasica
1. Leaf blades quite smooth (at most weakly scabrid at tip), upper surface glabrous or only with short, conical hairs, dead blades persistent; spikelets variegated bright green and violet; upper glume broadly or narrowly rounded
   2. Upper glume lanceolate, with narrow scarious margins; lemma with an awn 0.7-1,7 mm subsp. turcica
   2. Upper glume ovate, with broad scarious margins; lemma awnless
     3. Upper leaf surface usually glabrous, veins 7-9; stems smooth, or weakly scabrid only below panicle; branches of panicle loosely pilose; spikelets 10-11.5 mm subsp. woronowii
     3. Upper leaf surface with short, conical hairs; veins 9-11; stems distinctly scabrid below panicle; branches of panicle densely short-hairy; spikelets 9.5 mm subsp. argaea
