G. verum L., Sp. PL 107 (1753).
Caespitose perennial, (20-)50-120 cm. Stems generally numerous, erect to ascending, simple to sparingly branched, ± terete with 4 raised lines, ± puber-ulent. Leaves in whorls of (6-)8-12, (10-)15-30(-40) x 0.5-l(-2) mm, oblanceo-late-linear to subfiliform, shortly acuminate, margins strongly revolute and scabrid, sparingly scabrid to hairy above, densely puberulent to glabrescent below, often nigrescent on drying. Inflorescence oblong to ovoid, dense, ± leafy, with short, somewhat spreading branches, densely puberulent to glabrous. Pedicels c. 1-2 mm, slender, divaricate in fruit. Bracts 1-2 mm, lanceolate. Corolla golden-yellow, rotate, 2-3.5 mm diam., with ovate-lanceolate, acute to shortly apiculate lobes. Mericarps 1-1.5 mm, finely granulate, glabrous, sometimes hairy.

  W. Syria, N. Iraq, W. Iran. ir.-Tur. element? Specimens marked by an asterisk have the lower surface of leaves densely puberulent. G. bassitense Thieb. in Mem. Inst. Egypt 40:191 (1940), recorded by Mouterde, Nouv. Fl. Lib. Syr. 3:306 (1980) from the region of Antakya (C6 Hatay), possibly belongs to this subspecies.
In E. Anatolia some rather remarkable representatives of the G. verum group occur. To these belong plants with ovaries densely pubescent and corollas ± hairy outside, often classified as G. ruthenicum Willd., Sp. PL 1:597 (1798) and G. atropatanum Grossh. in Not. Syst. (Leningrad) 13:26 (1950) respectively. Further investigations are needed to clarify whether or not these can be maintained as separate species. Examples include: A8 Erzurum: 11 km from Tortum to Erzurum, c. 2000 m, Ehrend. et al. 787-118-3! A9 Kars: Kağizman to Akçay (Aras valley), 1100-1200 m, D. 46853!
