Mediterranean area, S.W. Asia. Variable ia height, degree of branching, flower size and colour. Closely allied to G. monophylla Boiss. & Heldr. ex Klatt, a species of the E. Mediterranean area (Libya, Egypt, Greece, Crete, ?Paiestine), which may yet be found in W. Anatolia. It differs from G. sisyrinchium in its dwarf habit (4-6 cm), normally with only a single leaf, and small flowers (falls 11-18 mm, anthers 3-4 mm). Small plants of G, sisyrinchium from arid habitats can look similar to G. monophyUa and the two have frequently been confused.
