  Plant herbaceous, stems sparsely or more densely crisped-hairy, especially above, robust, 15-48 cm. Leaves typically oblanceolate and entire, ± long-attenuate and pseudopetiolate below, crisped-pubescent; sometimes trisect or simple and narrowly oblanceolate to linear-lanceolate. Inflorescence broad and spreading, rather lax, up to 20 cm diam., the branches sparingly crisped-hairy to ± densely white-lanate. Sepals deltoid-ovate. Petals bright yellow, oblong to elliptic, 5-7 mm. Filaments abruptly expanded in the lower half and ± parallel-sided below. Loculi biovulate. Capsule segments rounded at the apex with convex glands usually with whitish margins, glabrous to pubescent or lanate. Fl. 6-7. Steppe and waste, fallow or cultivated ground, s. 1.-1400 m.

  Cyprus, W. Syria, Syrian Desert, N.W. Africa. The indumentum is not reliable as a subspecific character. Attila s.n. from Içel is densely lanate in the inflores-cence, while most Turkish and Iranian subsp. mesopotamicum is green throughout.
