H. canum (L.) Baumg., Enum. Stirp. Transs. 2: 85 (1816) sensu lato. Janchen in Abhand. Zool. Bot. Ges. Wien 4: 23 (1907). Syn: Cistus canus L., Sp. PI. 1:525 (1753).
Suffrutescent perennial. Leaves elliptic, exstipulate, either canescent with short stellate hairs or not. Inner sepals 3-5 mm. Petals yellow, 4-7 mm. Fl. 5-8. Open slopes, steppe, screes, etc., 800-2500 m.
A complex of morphological variants widely distributed in Europe, Asia Minor and Caucasia. The group has been much studied, but there seems to be no general agreement on the delimitation and rank of the various taxa comprising it. The most extensive account is given by Janchen (1907). It has not been possible to identify the Turkish specimens satisfactorily, as characters given by various authors break down frequently in the Turkish material. Pending a complete study of the variation within the complex, the Turkish material is here divided into 4 groups which have not been given formal rank. Synonymy from Boissier, Hayek, Janchen and Grosser is given where possible.
1. Leaves with stellate hairs at least on the lower surface
   2. Plants lax, from a very woody stock; leaves of the flowering stems narrowly elliptic to lanceolate; petals 5-7 mm Group a
   2. Plants rather strict, tight, from a slender woody stock; stem leaves elliptic to narrowly elliptic; petals 4-5 mm Group b
1. Leaves without stellate hairs
     3. Leaves bright green; sepals sparsely tomentose, greenish; petals 4-5(-6) mm Group c
     3. Leaves somewhat canescent; sepals densely white-tomentose; petals (5-)6-7 mm Group d

The status of these groups is very uncertain; if worth recognition at all, they seem to be, at most, varieties. Only specimens seen have been cited, and the extra-Turkish distributions given are based only on the material seen, no records having been accepted from the literature. The species occurs in S., C. & W. Europe, N.W. Africa, S. & C. Russia, Georgia.
