Rhizomatous perennial. Stems ± erect, (20-)30-60 cm, usually hirsute at base, sparsely pilose or glabrous above, unbranched or branched only at apex. Leaves ovate-elliptic, 2∙5-6x1-3 cm, sessile, base cordate and semi-amplexicaul, apex acute, margin scabrous, entire or denticulate, glabrous on both surfaces or sparsely pilose on prominent veins beneath. Capitula radiate, solitary or 2-5, rarely 12 in corymbs. Involucre 1∙5-2 cm broad; phyllaries imbricate, 4-seriate, oblong, acute, 5-7x1∙5-2 mm, hardened at base, herbaceous at apex, often spreading, glabrous, margins finely brownish ciliate; inner ones linear, 7-11 x 0∙75-1 mm, thin, finely pubescent or sericeous in upper part, ± erect. Ray flowers 35-70: ligules 10-15 mm. Disc flowers 7∙5-9 mm. Achenes finely ribbed, 1∙75-2 mm, glabrous. Pappus whitish, 7-8 mm; hairs 40-50, scabrous, connate at base. Fl. 5-9. Moist ground by streams and amongst shrubs, s.L-2440 m. Described from Europe (Hb. Linn. 999/25!).

Distribution (of species): most of Europe except extreme north, extending to C. Asia; Lebanon, Iraq and Iran; subsp. aspera (Poiret) Beck reportedly from S.E. Europe and eastwards to C. Asia. Euro-Sib. element. The density and distribution of the indumentum is variable in Turkish material and, as to the numberof capitula which Beck (op. cit. p. 302) also regarded as distinctive so far as the recognition of subsp. aspera is concerned (1-7 in subsp. salicina: numerous in subsp. aspera), specimens with solitary capitula are almost as numerous as those with 2-7, and only one specimen bearing 12 capitula has been observed. Certainly, plants with narrower, acuminate, thin-textured leaves that are characteristic of subsp. salicina in Europe are lacking and, if a distinction has to be made, the Turkish plants must be regarded as closer to subsp. aspera under which Beck included I. cordata Boiss.
