I. viscosa (L.) Aiton, Hort. Kew. 3:223 (1789). Syn: Erigeron viscosum L., Sp. PI. ed. 2: 1209 (1763); Dittrichia viscosa (L.) Greuter in Exs. Genev. fasc. 4, 71 (1973). Ic: Fiori, Ic. Fl. Ital. f. 3648 (1904). Figure 3, p. 11. Suffrutescent, viscid, rank-smelling herb of bushy growth, up to 1 or sometimes 2 m, ± covered with shortly stalked glands and sparse spreading pilose hairs. Leaves lanceolate or oblanceolate, 2-9 x 0∙3-1∙5(-2) cm, apex acute, base narrowed and subauriculate, margin entire, denticulate or serrate. Capitula numerous, radiate, borne in panicles or loose racemes. Involucre 0∙75-1 cm broad; phyllaries imbricate, 4-5-seriate; somewhat membranous, pale with green midribs; outer lanceolate, 1∙5-2 x 0∙5 mm; inner linear-lanceolate, 6-7 mm. Ray flowers c. 10, ligules 5-6x1∙5 mm. Disc flowers 5∙5-6∙5 mm. Achenes constricted at apex, sparsely pubescent and glandular. Pappus brownish, hairs c. 20, scabrous, 5∙5-6∙5 mm, connate at base into a cupule. Fl. 6-11. Hillsides, waste ground and marshy areas, s. 1.-800 m. Described from Europe (Hb. Linn. 994/2! Hb.
