Perennial, densely orrarely laxly caespitose. Stems 50-120 cm, basal sheaths usually dark reddish-brown. Stems and leaves with 10-20 strong ridges; pith interrupted. Lowest bract long, inflorescence pseudo-lateral, lax orrarely con-tracted, many-flowered. Perianth segments narrowly ovate, 2.5-4 mm, acumin-ate, outer ones longer. Stamens c. 1/2 x perianth; anthers 0.8-1 mm, 1-1.5 x filaments. Capsule exceeding or rarely equalling perianth, ovoid-trigonous to ellipsoid, acute to obtuse, mucronate.
