Indumentum of coarse 2-4-forked hairs. Stems 9-50 cm, simple and sparsely bracteate or sparingly branched and leafy, not swollen beneath capitulum. Leaves 5-18 x 1-1.7 cm, oblanceolate in outline, acute at apex and tapering at base, sinuate-dentate to pinnatilobed, hispid. Involucre hemispherical, 10-20 mm long; phyllaries pluriseriate, linear-acute to acuminate, ± regularly imbricate, outer ciliate-pectinate and dorsally glabrous, pubescent or densely setose. Achenes beaked, all pappose. Pappus dirty white, of 15-42 hairs. Fl. 5-8. - A taxonomically difficult species in which the coarseness and density of indumentum vary considerably. 1.
