L. hispidus L., Sp. Pl. 799 (1753). Ic: Fiori, Ic. Fl. Ital. f. 3841 (1904); Polunin, Fls. Europe t. 1524 (1969). Perennial, with horizontal cylindrical corky rhizome. Indumentum consisting in part of forked hairs. Stems 17-42 cm, unbranched, sparsely bracteate or naked. Leaves 5-16 x 1-3 cm, oblanceolate in outline, acute at apex and tapered at base, subentire to runcinate-dentate, hispid to glabrous. Involucre hemispherical, sub-2-seriate, 10-16 mm long; phyllaries with membranous margins, hispid or glabrous. Achenes truncate at apex, all pappose. Pappus yellowish. Fl. 7-9. Forests, fields, banks, 20-3300 m. 1. Leaves and phyllaries sparsely to densely hispid var. hispidus 1. Leaves without forked hairs and phyllaries without hispid hairs, glabrous var. glabratus var. hispidus. Syn: L. hastilis L. var. vulgaris W.Koch, Syn. Fl.
