L. genistifolia (L.) Miller, Gard. Dict. ed. 8, no. 14 (1768); Alex in Can. J. Bot. 40:295-307 (1962).
Perennial herb, very variable. Stems 20-130 cm, ascending or erect, simple or paniculate. Leaves alternate. ± dense, median ovate, lanceolate or linear, 15-60 x 0.5-20 mm, rarely subcordate at base, 1-3-nerved. Racemes dense to lax and elongate. Bracts lanceolate, seldom reaching top of calyx, lowest sometimes deflexed. Lower pedicels 2-4(-6) mm. Calyx lobes ovate to narrowly linear-lanceolate, rounded at base, acute, herbaceous throughout, 2-5. mm, always glabrous. Corolla bright or sulphur yellow, with or without reddish venation, (6-)8-12(-14) mm; spur conical-subulate, (3-)5-8(-10) mm, ± straight. Capsule spherical, 3-4 mm. slightly longer to shorter than calyx. Seeds compressed-tetrahedral, 1-1.2 mm, rugulose, angles often narrowly winged. Fl. 5-8.
A narrower circumscription of the polymorphic L. genistifolia is adopted here than in Fl. Europaea 3:230 (1972), treating both L. grandiflora Desf. and L. sofiana Velen. as separate species. Within L. genistifolia, six weakly delimited subspecies can be recognized in Turkey.
1. Median leaves 10-45 x longer than broad, linear-lanceolate to narrowly linear. 1-4 mm broad, 1-nerved; stems ascending to erect, 20-60 cm, usually arising
from a creeping stock
   2. Flowers bright brassy yellow (lutea); median leaves linear to linear-lanceo-, late, flat, (l-)2-4 mm broad subsp. linifolia
2: Flowers palish yellow (flava); median leaves linear-filiform, usually involute, 0.5-1 (-1 .5) mm broad subsp. polyelada
1. Median leaves 2-10 x longer than broad, ovate to lanceolate, 3-20 mm broad. l-3-nerved; stems always erect (unless grazed), 23-130 cm
     3. Flowers clear yellow, not reddish-veined
       4. Corolla bright yellow (lutea); inflorescence ± lax. at least in fruit; calyx lobes ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate subsp. genistifolia
       4. Corolla paler yellow (flava); inflorescence dense, even in fruit (though often long); calyx lobes usually lanceolate to linear-lanceolate subsp. confertiflora
     3. Flowers yellow with reddish-brown venation
         5. Calyx lobes lanceolate, 3-5 mm; corolla 10-12 mm, tube at least as broad as long; spur only 5-7 mm subsp. praealta
         5. Calyx lobes ovate, 2-2.5 mm; corolla 8-9 mm, tube narrower than long; spur c. 8 mm subsp. arfvinensis

C. & S.E. Europe eastwards to Siberia; Caucasia? Euro-Sib, element. L. euxina Velen. may be a dwarf (often grazed) small-leaved maritime ecotype. The Crimean L. politico Kupr. is only a small-flowered variant of subsp. genistifolia and in Anatolia falls within the morphological range of the latter. L. iberica Kem.-Nath. (Fl. Gruzii 7:504, 1952) and L, imeretńica Kem.-Nath. (op. cit. 503) are also very close to subsp. genistifolia and certainly conspecific.

Endemic. E. Medit. element. The corolla is proportionally broader than usually found elsewhere in L. genistifolia, but as this feature occurs sporadically in other parts of the species' range, specific status is not justified.
