Europe, Siberia, N.W. Africa, S.W. and C. Asia, Himalaya. Plants with more dense and more spreading indumentum (especially on bracts), little-branched stem, larger capitula and paleae with more acute apex have often been incorrectly called Filago lagopus (Willd.) Parlatore; their taxonomic status requires further investigation. Some of the plants named belong to the following species.
