M. secacul Banks & Sol. in Russell, Aleppo 2:349 (1794). Map 69, p. 495.
Pubescent, often greyish perennial with a thick rootstock; stems 15-75 cm, faintly striate to grooved, usually densely tomentellous below. Basal leaves 1-2-pinnate, lamina oblong to triangular in outline, ultimate segments narrowly elliptic to ovate, 1-2 cm, lobed to pinnatisect, incised-dentate to crenate. Umbels 15-20-rayed, longest rays when in fruit 1-1¼ x the shortest; umbellules c. 20-flowered; bracts usually absent, occasionally 1-2, deciduous. Fruit 6-8(-9) x c. 5 mm, obovate, sparsely hairy to glabrous; margin c. 1 mm wide, glabrous; commissures glabrous. Fl. 5-7. Rocky slopes, cliffs, under Quercus, 100-2000 m. 1. Basal leaves 2-pinnate, triangular in outline Group A
1. Basal leaves 1-pinnate, oblong in outline Group B

In the zone of overlap and extending N.E. along the 'Anatolian Diagonal' from Urfa to Gümüşane, there is a series of specimens that are intermediate between these two groups, as follows: A7 Gümüşane: Sobran, Sint. 1894:6136b! 23 km from Gümüşane to Bayburt, 1300 m, Hub.-Mor. 15450! B7 Erzincan: Egin (Kemaliye), Sint. 1890:2475! B7 Elaziğ: Harput, Schuschnas, Sint. 1889:655! B7 Malatya: 12 km from Malatya to Arabkir, 1420-1500 m, Hub.-Mor. 9313! C8 Mardin: Mardin, 900 m, D. 28609!
Distribution of species: W. Syria, N. Iraq., N. W. Iran. A very variable species, especially in the degree of dissection of the basal leaves. Although two groups of plants with differing geographical distributions may be recognized in Turkey, there appears to be a complete range of intermediates between them. Furthermore, since they can only be recognized when fully developed basal leaves are present, I hesitate to give them formal taxonomic rank. Group B, comprising the plants with 1-pinnate leaves, closely resembles M. graveolens (Sprengel) Hoffm. but appears to differ slightly in the fruit and in the shape of the leaf lobes. However, the taxonomic relationship between these cannot be settled without reference to more material both with ripe fruit and with complete basal leaves. A specimen from C7 Urfa (36 km W. of Ceylanpinar on the Syrian border, 300 m, Hub.-Mor. 13672!) with fruit c. 12 mm long, finely pubescent even on the margins and withhairy commissures and 1-pinnate leaves, is probably referable to M. secacul subsp. aucheri (Boiss.) Townsend, (M. aucheri Boiss. in Ann. Sci. Nat. ser. 3, 2:133, 1844), a taxon from N. Iraq and W. Iran. Two specimens from C10 Hakkari (Bacirge, 1700-1800 m, D. 45280! NehiI Çayi, 1600-1700 m, D. 44898), both lacking leaves and both with pubemlent mericarp margins but otherwise resembling M. secacul, may represent a new taxon.
