N., W. & C. Europe, C. & S. Russia, Caucasia, Siberia. Euro-Sib. element. Three European species, M. barbatam Waldst. & Kit., M. cristatum L. and M. silvaticum L., have been recorded from N. Turkey but the records probably result from misidentifications of this taxon. The Caucasian M. caucasica Bunge has been recorded from N.E. Anatolia but the specimens I have seen also belong here.
