Mediterranean area, Transcaucasia; introduced in Iran, Kashmir, China, Japan and perhaps elsewhere; also widely cultivated. In Turkey it is apparently native in the localities cited above; it is also cultivated, especially around Istanbul. Cultivated forms frequently have larger flowers with broader perianth segments (maximum values in brackets in above description), e.g. A2(E) Istanbul: 'narcisse de Constantinople', cult., 9 iv 1892, Azn.! They have been called N. orientalis L., Mant. 62 (1767) and N. 'Grand Primo'; see Bot. Mag. 24: t. 940, 946 (1906). Meikle (Kew Bull. 1954:177, 1954) notes that a double-flowered cuitivar is grown on Khios.
