  Perennial herb, to 100 cm, adpressed-pilose, hirsute, or ± glabrous and
often pruinose. Branches to 12 pairs per stem, to 25 cm. Leaves petiolate or subsessile (petiole to 20 mm), ovate, elliptic or roundish, 6-40 x 5-30 mm, acute or obtuse, conspicuously glandular-punctate or not. Spicules 3-30 x 2-8 mm. Bracts obovate or elliptic, 2-10 x 1-7 mm, ± acute or acuminate. Calyx 24 mm. Corolla purple, pink or white, 3-10 mm. Fl. 5-10. Dry hills and rocky slopes, on calcareous and non-calcareous soils, often in partial shade of coniferous or mixed woods, macchie, s.l-2500 m.

  Most of Europe, S.W., C. & E. Asia east to Taiwan. Euro-Sib, element.
  Distribution of species: Mediterranean area, temperate S.W., C. & E. Asia east to Taiwan. An extremely variable species. The distinctions between the subspecies recognised here are not always clear.
Sect. Prolaticorolla Ietswaart. Differs from Sect. Origanum mainly by flowers larger; corolla 2-lipped to c. 1/6, c. 3 x calyx; stamens ± included in corolla; filaments c. 1 /4 x corolla.
