  Stolons few, short, thick. Leaves numerous, oblanceolate to oblong, with numerous simple eglandular hairs and dense stellate hairs below and rarely above. Flowering sterns up to 40 cm, scapose, each with a single capitulum. Phyllaries 6-14x1-3.5 mm, outer ovate to linear-lanceolate, inner lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, abruptly or gradually narrowed to obtuse or subacute apex, with dense stellate hairs and simple eglandular or glandular hairs, or both. Outer ligules usually with a dark red stripe on outer face.

  C. Europe, Italy, Sicily, Balkans, Crimea, Caucasus. This subspecies normally has pale simple eglandular hairs on the involucre, which sometimes have dark bases. A specimen in E (A7 Trabzon: Zigana Da., 2300-2400 m, T.Baytop (ISTE 14285)!) has dark hairs with swollen black bases on the involucre and strongly approaches subsp. hoppeana, which does not otherwise appear to occur in Turkey.
