Alt. 2:287 (1822); P. incana G.H. &F. W. Schultz in Flora 45:431 (1862); H. verruculatum subsp. barevanicum Woronow & Zahn in Monit. Jard. Bot. Tiflis 22:21 (1912); H. verruculatum subsp. tephro-polium Zahn in Engler, Pflanzenreich 82 (IV.280):1374 (1923), nom. superfl. illegit. pro H. incanum subsp. incanum.   Stolons absent. Rosette leaves 30-200 x 5-40 mm, usually elliptic to linearlanceolate, ± acute, entire, attenuate at base, withering early, with numerous stellate hairs, few to numerous rigid simple eglandular hairs and scattered glandular hairs. Flowering stems 45-110 cm, with numerous stellate and few to numerous glandular hairs throughout, with simple eglandular hairs only at base, with 4-12 leaves smaller and narrower than those of rosette and usually semi-amplexicaul. Inflorescence laxly paniculate to umbellate; capitula 10-60. Phyllaries 8-11 x 1-2 mm, linear-lanceolate, obtuse to acute, with dense stellate and glandular hairs, with or without few simple eglandular hairs. Ligules yellow. Fl. 6-8. Mountain pastures and steppe, woodlands, 1150-2500 m.   Described from a plant of unknown origin in the Berlin Botanical Garden.   Mainly E. Anatolia; rare in the S.
