Leaves 4.5-11.5(-17) x 1.5-3(-3.5) cm, elliptic-ovate to elliptic, gradually narrowed into petiole, entire, 3-7(-9)-veined, with septate hairs. Scapes striate, erect or ascending, 25-30 cm. Spikes (3-)4-9.5(-15) cm, dense, narrowly cylindrical. Bracts narrowly ovate, 2-2.5 mm, often glabrous, with fleshy keel. Anterior sepals c. 2.5 mm, obovate-elliptic, glabrous, strongly keeled; posterior 2.5 mm, elliptic-ovate, ± rotund. Corolla lobes shining, white-hyaline, lanceolate-ovate or narrowly ovate, midrib ± indistinct; tube c. 2 mm, pale brown. Filaments c. 2.5-3 x as long as corolla tube, pale brown or lilac. Anthers lilac, purple or white. Capsule ellipsoid. Seeds usually 4. Fl. 6-8. Montane slopes, steppe, dry grassland, 1600-2300 (-2500?) m. Described from Europe (Hb. Linn. 144/5, photo). E., N.E., S.
