Trunk to 16 m in girth at base (in Bursa), branches widely spreading. Bark on older trunks consisting of small, square, dark brown, per-sistent plates. Leaves deeply 3-5(-7)-lobed to c. 3/5, 11-18 x 12-24 cm, broadly cuneate or truncate at base, lobes longer than broad, 7-11 x 2.5-6 cm, coarsely toothed or entire, glabrous or subglabrous at maturity. Petiole 2.5-7.5 cm. Fruiting heads 3-6, on long pendulous axis to 13-19 cm. Fl. 3-5. In forests, valley bottoms, alluvial soils rich in pebbles, by rivers; widely cultivated as a street tree and elsewhere, s.l.-1100 m. Described from Asia, 'Tauro' [S. Turkey], Macedonia, Mt. In Turkey certainly native at least in Outer and S.E. Anatolia. P. hybrida Brot., Fl. Lusit. 2:487 (1804) (Syn: P. acerifolia(Alton) Willd.), the London Plane, is commonly planted as a street tree in the Istanbul area. It is distinguished by its less deeply divided leaves, the middle lobe nearly as broad as long, longer fruiting heads 2(-3) together, and bark which exfoliates in large flakes on older trunks. It is either a hybrid between P. orientalis and P. occidentalis L. or a cultivar of the first (Fl. Europaea 1:384, 1964). |
