P. longifolia Trin. in Mem. Acad. Sci. Pétersb. ser. 6, 4(2): Bot. 61 (1836), incl. subsp. meyeri (Trin. ex Roshev.) Tzvelev in Novit. Syst. Pl. Vasc. (Leningrad) 11:29 (1974). Syn: P. paryadrica Boiss. in Tchihat., Asie Min. Bot. 2: 608(1860)! P. controversa Bal. in Bull. Soc.Bot. Fr. 21:16(1874)! P. meyeri Trin. ex Roshev. in Fl. URSS 2:383 & 753 (1934). Ic: Fl. Gruzii 1: t. 25 (1941), as P. meyeri. Figure 22. Map 89.
Stout perennial forming compact tussocks, sometimes rhizomatous, with stramineous leaf-sheath remains at base. Stem 30-60(-100) cm, smooth, slightly compressed above. Ligule 1-2 mm, truncate. Leaf blades (1.5-)2-4.5 mm broad, channelled, gradually tapering to an abruptly mucronate apex. Uppermost stem leaf c. 5 cm, erect. Panicle 7-15 cm, dense, ellipsoid; branches scab-rid, 2-4 together at lower nodes. Spikelets (5-)7-8 mm, densely grouped. Glumes subequal. Lemma glabrous, lacking basal wool. Palea keels scabrid above. Anthers 2.5-3.5 mm. Fl. 7. Herb-rich alpine pastures, on slate, 1920-2800 m.
Type: [Caucasia] in promontorio caucasia occidentalis versus montem Pagum(alt. 500 hexap.) [c. 900 m,], C.A. Meyer (holo. LE, photo!).
N.E. Anatolia. A7 Giresun: Paryadres pass between Lidjese (nr Asarcik) and Gumbet Khan (Kümbet), 1918-2646 m, Tchihatcheff 613 (type of P. paryadrica)! A8 Rize: Bousdouan Da. above Khabakhor (Bozdoğan Da. above Kabakçor), 2500 m, ix 1866, Bal. (type of P. controversa)! A9 Kars: Pereval Jalagustschamski (Yalnizçam pass), 2200 m, Holmberg 2495! B8 Erzurum: Palandöken Da, N. side, 2800 m, Ehrend. et al. 787-116-7! B10 Ağri: Ağri Da. (Grossheim 2: map 118, as P. meyeri Trin.).
Caucasia, N. Iraq, N.W. Iran. Euxine element. A specimen from A8 Rize: Bousdouan Da. above Khabakhor, 2500 m, 1866, Bal. s.n., with shorter spike-lets (c. 5 mm) and undeveloped anthers, was recognised by the collector as a hybrid. Its parents are likely to be P. longifolia and P. chaixii, which both grow in the vicinity. The existence of such a hybrid provides evidence for the closerelationship between Poa sect. Homalopoa Dumort., centred in the Alps, and Poa sect. Macropoa Hermann from Caucasia and Crimea to which P. longifolia belongs. Bor (in sched. 25 x 1970) notes that "this agrees with the type [of P. hybrida] from Hb. Lausanne [LAU, photo. K!] which however has a broader panicle and slightly broader leaves." Rhizomatous material of P. longifolia is sometimes treated as a separate subspecies or species, P. mey eri Trin. ex Roshev.
