W. & C. Europe, Mediterranean area, Georgia, Syrian Desert, N. Iran, Arabia, Sinai. A variable species, often further divided. Boissier (Fl. Or. 1: 736, 1867) records P. alsinifolium (Biv.) DC. from Bithynia. This species is said to be distinguished from P. tetraphyllum by its sepals exceeding 2 mm, stamens always 5, and seeds more than 0.5 m. These correlations do not hold on our material, and P. alsinifolium seems to be at best only a variety of P. tetraphyllum.
