Cosmopolitan weed. This and the previous 2 species form part of a complex usually known as the P. aviculare agg. This complex has been much studied in Europe (cf. Flora Europaea 1: 78-79, 1964 for the most modern treatment). We have found it very difficult to apply the European treatments to the Turkish material - correlations found in European specimens apparently break down in those from Turkey. We have maintained 3 species as a basis for further study, and have distinguished them by the most convenient characters, but we must stress that, at least in the case of arenastrum & aviculare, the resulting taxa are not very homogeneous. The Turkish material is rather scanty, due, presumably to collectors avoiding so-called 'common weeds'. More specimens are necessary before the relationship between the Turkish & European taxa can be established. For most purposes identification to P. aviculare agg. is quite sufficient.
