P. recta L., Sp. P1. 497 (1753).
Ascending or erect perennial; flowering stems (2-)20-60(-90) cm, pubescent with long and short eglandular hairs and usually with few short glandular hairs. Leaves digitate; leaflets 5 or 7, oblong-obovate to linear-lanceolate or sometimes cuneate-obovate, 10-50(-70) x 5-25 mm, serrate, incised-serrate to pinnatisect to the base, sometimes doubly so, on both sides ± villous, green or grey. Flowers in cymes. Epicalyx segments linear-lanceolate, as long as or slightly shorter than sepals which are triangular-ovate, (3.5-)5-8 mm. Petals yellow, obcordate, 6-10(-13) mm, longer than sepals. Achenes rugose, winged; style conical at the base, shorter than achene. Fl. 5-7. Meadows, pastures, wet and shady places, s.l.-2300 m.
Described from Italy (Hb. Linn. 655/15, photo!).
I follow Fl. Europaea 2:42 in accepting P.' recta as specifically distinct from the W. Mediterranean P. hirta L.; the latter differs in its cuneate leaflets few-toothed only above, and indumentum with only long eglandular hairs. P. recta is an extremely variable polyploid complex. In Turkey I can recognize three main informal groups which integrade to some extent. Notes are given on some other specimens which do not fit into the three groups.
1. Sepals 3.5-4 mm; petals 6-7 mm; leaflets obovate-cuneate, pinnatisect, divided into linear-lanceolate teeth Group C
1. Sepals 5-8 mm; petals 7-10(-13) mm; leaflets oblong-obovate to linear-lanceolate, serrate to pinnatisect with triangular or oblong teeth
   2. Leaflets serrate, teeth triangular, acute, (5-)6-8(-9) on each side Group A
   2. Leaflets incised-serrate to pinnatisect, teeth oblong, acute or obtuse, (6-)7-10(-ll) on each side Group B
Group A.

Turkish material differs from the typical European P. recta L. s.s. in having leaflets with fewer teeth, (5-)6-8(-9) on each side instead of (6-)9-14(-16); veryvariable in size and in density ofindumentum. It is not clear what the relationship of Turkish variants is to some of those already described from Europe.
