P. pabularia Lindl. in Quart. J. Sci. Lit. Arts 19:7 (1825). Syn: P. lophoptera Boiss. in Ann. Sci. Nat. ser. 3, 2:82 (1844)!
Glabrous or papiilate perennial to 60 cm. Lower leaves c. 6-pinnate, 15-45 cm long; lobes linear, 5-20 x 0.5-1 mm. Bracts and bracteoles narrowly linear to filiform, often persistent. Fruiting umbels (5-)11-20-rayed. Sepals usually conspicuous. Petals yellow, glabrous. Fruit narrowly to broadly ellipsoid or ± globular, 8-15(-18) x4-9 mm; wings usually well developed, strongly undulate or plicate, with outgrowths of varying size and density at their base; blocks of mesocarp tissue separated by the involute exocarp. Fl. 6-7(-8). Screes, rocky, often limestone slopes, 780-3000 m.
Type: India, in the neighbourhood of Imbal or Draz, Lindley (photo HUJ!).
  E. and adjacent C. & S. Anatolia. A8 Gümüşane: Berdak, nr. Bayburt, Bourgeau 101! A9 Kars: 50 km S. of Kars, 1540 m, M. Zohary & Plitm. 2267-30! B6 Kayseri: Sariz to Pinarbaşi, 58 km N. of Göksun, 1580 m, Hub.-Mor. 10918! B7 Tunceli: Munzur Da., above Ovacik, 2400 m, D. 31365! B8 Erzurum: 28 km from Varto to Hinis, 1700 m, D. 46267! B9 Bitlis: Nemrut Da. crater, 3000 m, Tong 172! C5 Taurus Mts., Aucher 3587 (type of P. lophoptera)! C6 Malatya: 9 km S. of Perveri, 780 m, Hub.-Mor. 13655! C10 Hakkari: Samdi Da., 2500 m, Rix 155!
Soviet Armenia, N. Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, W. Pakistan, India, Turkestan. Ir.-Tur. element. A variable species; the above description applies to Turkish material only. It is expected that more study will result in further synonymy, especially in the eastern part of the range of this species.
P. scabra Náb. (Publ. Fac. Sci. Univ. Masaryk Brno 35:126, 1923), described from C9 Hakkari: Mt. Kela-Mame, above Hoz, c. 2000 m, Nábělek 531, n.v., is supposed to differ chiefly in the petals being densely papillose on their dorsal surface and in the general scabridity of the plant. The type lacked ripe fruit but the ovary was said to have remotely undulate wings and scabrid valleculae. Two specimens from B9 Van (Şuşanis Da., above Van, 1 vii 1949, Hub.-Mor.!) and C9 Mardin (Cudi Da., above Hessana, 1200-1400 m, D. 42793!) fit with this description; the former however also has ripe fruits which are indistinguishable from those of P. pabularia. Whether P. scabra should be considered just a scabrid form of P. pabularia or a taxon in its own right, is open to doubt.
